本次考试篇章阅读中长文学涉及到的主题内容为美国移民文化。移民文化一直是SAT考试的热门话题之一，也是沈阳新航道SAT阅读老师们课堂讲解重点之一。此文章节选自“Mrs. Dutta Writes A Letter”（发表于1998年）,讲述了印度女人Mrs. Dutta 搬到美国与儿子、儿媳及孙子一起居住，由于文化认识上的差异而产生了一些不和谐。下文为文章序言部分：

“Thefollowing passage is from a short story first published in 1998. Mrs. Dutta hasrecently moved to the United States to live with her son Sagar, his wifeShymoli, and their children. ”

全文多为场景以及心理阐述，考生在阅读的过程中需要注意捕捉情感态度词（形容词、副词、动词），通过情感态度词来诠释作者的心理变化以及正、负情绪。例如：

 

At first Shyamoli was happy enoughto have someone take over the cooking. "It's wonderful to comehome to a hot dinner," she'd say. Or "Mother, what crispy papads, andyour fish curry is out of this world."But recentlyshe hastaken to picking at her food, and once or twice from the kitchenMrs. Dutta has caught wisps of words, intensely whispered:"cholesterol," "all putting on weight," "she'sspoiling you." Andthough Shyamoli always says no when thechildren ask if they can have burritos from the freezer instead, Mrs. Duttasuspects that she would really like to say yes.

The children. A heavinesspulls at Mrs. Dutta's entire body when she thinks of them. Like so much in thiscountry, they have turned out to be -- yes, she might as well admit it adisappointment.

For this she blames, inpart, theOlan Mills portrait. Perhaps it was foolish of her to set so muchstore by a photograph, especially one taken years ago. But it was such a charmingscene -- Mrinalini in a ruffled white dress with her arm around her brother,Pradeep chubby and dimpled in a suit and bow tie, a glorious autumn forestblazing red and yellow behind them. (Later Mrs. Dutta was saddened to learnthat the forest was merely a backdrop in a studio in California, where real trees did not turnsuch colors.)

The picture has arrived,silver-framed and wrapped in a plastic sheet filled with bubbles, with a notefrom Shyamoli explaining that it was a Mother’s Day gift. (A strange concept, aday set aside to honor mothers.) For a week Mrs. Dutta couldnot decide where it should be hung. If she put it in the drawingroom, visitors would be able to admire her grandchildren, but if she put it onthe bedroom wall, she would be able to see the photo, last thing, before shefell asleep. She had finally opted for the bedroom, and later, when she was tooill with pneumonia to leave her bed for a month, she’d been glad of it.

 

在文章的后四段中，有很多的情感态度词，那么从这些情感态度词就能看出文章主要人物的正、负态度。如我们通过对情感态度词：“ happy enough to” “taken to picking at her food, ”“ always says no ”的认识，了解到Mrs. Dutta 的儿媳Shyamoli, 一开始对于Mrs. Dutta 做饭很开心，可是接下来就开始抱怨食物的不可口；而“she might as well admit it a disappointment.”又显示出Mrs. Dutta对于她的孙子们失望的态度。最后一段，“She had finally opted forthe bedroom, and later, when she was too ill with pneumonia to leave her bedfor a month, she’dbeen glad of it.” Mrs. Dutta宁愿得肺炎住院也不愿意面对卧室里的相片。当然考生在注意捕捉情感态度词的同时也需要注意段落中的转折词和转折句。

那么相关的态度题就很容易解决了，如：

Lines 47-50 (“At….. world”) suggest that Shyamoli’s attitude towardMrs. Dutta’s doing the family cooking was initially one of

(A) suspicion

(B) curiosity

(C) ambivalence

(D) surprise

(E) appreciation

 

总体来说SAT阅读在题型设置依旧保持着常规题型不变，其中主旨题，互联题以及细节题的考察比例会有所提升，因此考生在备考过程中一定要注意对于文章主旨以及细节的把握。从复习资料来看自08年至14年的真题依然是考生备考以及考前演练的宝贵资料，除此之外OG, OC, KAPLAN,PRINCETON, BARRON, 等资料也需要按计划逐步完成。那么认真“刷题”的基础上需提前“破解”各类题型的解题技巧，这样才能达到事半功倍的效果。
