You all know the common methods for achieving a high SAT score. Use better grammar, show your vocabulary, stay on topic, prepare examples, write more words (always always always write more words).

 

But at its core writing is not a science, but an art. There is no step-by-step path to achieving a 12 essay. There is no “right” answer. Every SAT essay that achieves a perfect score of 12 is unique with its own beauty and power.

 

Here are my 3 tips for you to bring beauty, power, and creativity to your SAT writing.

在这里是我为大家准备可以帮助让你们的SAT写作变得更加优美，有力度，和创意的建议。

 

1. Break the SAT “Choice A vs. Choice B” Paradigm

 

The SAT essay prompt almost inevitably proposes a comparison of some kind between two choices or points of view and asks you to write in favor of one point of view. What you must realize is that the world is not nearly so black and white. Every question has a third answer.

 

This strategy can be dangerous and requires careful practice, but with high risks come high rewards (a full score on your essay, to be exact). Walk the middle ground between the choices you are asked to take and craft your own answer, combining the best of both sides to achieve a unique answer to the essay prompt.

 

The sheep will dutifully choose “Choice A” or “Choice B” and try to find a way to apply their Steve Jobs/Apple story. Choose the invisible “Choice C” and write an essay (carefully still on topic) that shows the grader you can think critically and that you have new ideas worth hearing.

 

You may be wary of this tactic, but it is even implicitly acknowledged as an excellent writing strategy by the College Board. On the SAT website where sample scored essays are shown, one of the essays that was marked full points used exactly this method.

 

The essay prompt asked (my paraphrase) “Should we look to past experiences to make decisions OR will focusing on the past prevent us from moving forward.” The essay writer argued that “you should rely on your past without letting it control you,” which is a perfect example of rejecting Choice A and Choice B in favor of Choice C.

 

To separate your essay from the herd, you must think outside of the two choices you are given and find a truly unique position.

 

1.打破SAT的“两边观点必须选一边”范例

 

SAT写作中给出的提示大多数会不可避免的会提出两个不同的选择或观点比较然后要求你选择一方表达你的个人观点。而我们必须要意识到的是，这个世界并不是非黑即白的，每个问题都有第三个答案。

绵羊们会乖乖的选择A或者B然后绞尽脑筋想着怎么套到他们那些苹果公司和乔布斯的故事里面去。但你却可以选择隐形的C选项写出一篇让阅卷老师认为独具一格值得阅读且具有批判性思想的文章。

 

你也许比较谨慎，不敢尝试，但这个战术已经被美国大专院校委员会默认为是优秀的写作策略。

 

在SAT的网站上给出的得分例文中你可以找到一篇获得满分的论文，这篇论文就采用了上面所说的方法。

 

论文材料提问（我这里简述一下）“我们应该根据过去的经验来作出决定，还是眼看着过去只会让我们止步不前。” 论文的作者写道：“你应该与你的过去相惜相存，依赖它却不拘束与它。” 这就是一个完美的抛弃选项A或者B选择了C的例子。

2. Write With Emotion

 

Have you ever read a book or seen seen a movie or heard a song that brings tears to your eyes and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end? If you don’t know what I mean, stop right now and go read the short story “A Man Without a Country,” or listen to your country’s national anthem, or re-watch the movie “Les Miserables” (especially the last scene).

 

Use these and other works of art as your guides in practicing for the SAT essay. Let the pain, the joy, the sorrow, and the beauty of life seep through in your written words. Instead of writing inanely about Steve Jobs and Apple (possibly the most over-used example in the history of writing), use examples of war, love, pain, sacrifice, struggle, and triumph.

 

When you re-read what you have written and feel the tingling as your hair stands on end—then and only then will you know you are on the right path.

2.用感情去写作

 

你有没有试过在读一本书，看一部电影或者听到一首歌的时候眼眶湿润头皮发麻？如果你不知道我在说什么的话，放下这篇文章去读《没有国家的人》，听一听《义勇军进行曲》，或者再看一遍《悲惨世界》（特别是最后那个场景）。

 

让以上或其他的艺术作品来帮助你的SAT论文写作。让痛苦，快乐，忧伤和生命的美丽贯穿于你的字句行间。与其毫无意义的从众写乔布斯和苹果公司的相关故事（已经被写透写烂了的例子），还不如改写各种关于战争，爱，痛楚，牺牲，自我挣扎和成就的例子。

 

当你重新阅读你写的文章时如果觉得头皮发麻汗毛从头竖到尾的话-你就知道你已经走在正确的大道上了。

 

3. Write With Force

 

“Veni! Vidi! Vici!” said the Roman general. I came! I saw! I conquered! Your essay SHOULD show your mastery of grammar and sentence structure in English. But at the high points of your essay don’t write sentences that are 4 and 5 lines long and take 2 minutes to read. Briefness focuses the readers’ attention and brings power to your writing.

 

Can you, like the Roman general, say something powerful in 6 words? In 3 words? In 2 words? The personal statement essay that got me admitted to a top-30 US university ended with a 1-word exclamation. “Lead!”

 

Use varied sentence structures throughout your essay, but in the key parts chisel away the verbosity and hammer home your ideas with simple, powerful sentences.

 

3. 写出文章的力度

 

罗马的大将军曾说：“Vene! Vidi! Vici!” 我来了！我看见了！我征服了！ 你的论文应该展示出你对英文语法的掌控和句子结构的驾驭力。但高分的论文是没有要两分钟才能读得完的四五行长句的。聚集读者的关注点，用火热的文笔引发出激情，创造出力度。

 

你可以像罗马大将军一样，仅仅用六个词语就能说出极具力量的话语吗？三个呢？两个呢？ 让我进入了全美国前三十名的大学的个人简述里我只用了一个感叹词结尾。“Lead！”

 

在你的论文里你可以由始至终都贯穿不同的句子结构，但关键的地方请凿掉那些啰啰嗦嗦的长篇大论，用简单有力量的句子直接指向你的观点。

 

 

Conclusion

 

I’ll say it again. Grammar, structure, content, and vocabulary are the basic building blocks of writing. Without them you are lost. But to vault your writing to the next level you must hear the music, not just single notes. You must create a masterpiece, not just mix different colors on a pallet.
