SAT阅读的难点不仅仅在背单词上

　　众所周知，SAT或ACT考试成绩在美国大学申请中占有一定的地位，尽管美国的大学并不是唯分数论，但是对于要求提供SAT或ACT考试成绩的学校来说，申请者如果能取得较好的SAT或ACT成绩就会为申请增加成功的砝码。

　　SAT2在考取美国高中时不是必须的，有些好的大学也不要求，但是如果不考SAT2高中毕业想申请好的大学时就会受到很大限制。

　　首先，要搞清楚所要申请学校的要求。并非所有的美国大学都要求有SAT2成绩，相当一部分普通大学和少量名校都不需要(NOT REQUIRED)考SAT2。如果你申请的学校都是不需要SAT2成绩的，而你备考TOEFL、SAT1的时间又很紧张，那么就没有必要去考SAT2。但大部分的美国名校是需要有SAT2成绩的，一般是需要两门或三门。在需要SAT2成绩的学校中，对具体科目的要求又不尽相同，有的学校没有规定科目，有的则给出了相当程度的指定，如加州理工学院(CALTECH)就要求所有申请者必须提供SAT2的数学2和科学类中的一门(即物理或化学或生物)成绩。

　　初谈阅读时，总有一些家长和学生是抱着这样的一种心理看待英语阅读：”阅读，就是要背单词啊。每句话的单词都会了，文章自然就看懂了。”

　　但是，SAT阅读的难点往往并不仅在单词部分。难点是什么?凌驾于单词之上的阅读理解。

　　1.经典长难句解析：

　　Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations; but, on a candid examination of history, we shall find that turbulence, violence, and abuse of power, by the majority trampling on the rights of the minority, have produced factions and commotions, which, in republics, have, more frequently than anyother cause, produced despotism.

　　剖析句子结构：

　　Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there aremore instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations; but, on a candid examination of history, we shall find that turbulence, violence, and abuse of power, by the majority trampling on the rights of the minority, have produced factions and commotions, which, in republics, have, more frequently than any other cause, produced despotism.

　　对单词和句子结构都有了把握之后就不难看出，理解作者看法的关键在于把握这句话中的两个”more”:

　　1)侵犯公民自由的过程往往不是violent and sudden，更多的是gradual and silent。

　　2)abuse of power by the majority trampling on the rights of the minority 导致专制的情况，远胜于其他任何原因。

　　总结一下，即 the author claims that pubic liberty is threatened by the majority’s abuse of power。

　　上面这个句子的风格是新SAT阅读(History类)文章中的典型代表。历史类文章不是考察学生世界历史，说白了基本都是 founding document(建国文献)，比如联邦党人文集，女权类文章中的节选。这些文章往往有高阶单词和复杂的句型。

　　单词扫盲：

　　abridgement 删节;

　　encroachment 侵占(相关词汇补充：infringe v.侵犯);

　　usurpation 篡权、侵占;

　　candid 率直的;

　　turbulence 动荡;

　　abuseof power 滥用权力;

　　trample 踩/践踏、侵犯;

　　faction 派系派别(相关词汇补充：讲到宗教方面的派系用的比较多的是：sect);commotion 喧嚣、骚乱;

　　despotism 专制主义;

　　despot 专制君主(相关的词汇补充：tyranny暴政、专制国家tyrant 暴君)
