细数新SAT写作部分的文章理解

  众所周知,SAT或ACT考试成绩在美国大学申请中占有一定的地位,尽管美国的大学并不是唯分数论,但是对于要求提供SAT或ACT考试成绩的学校来说,申请者如果能取得较好的SAT或ACT成绩就会为申请增加成功的砝码。

  SAT2在考取美国高中时不是必须的,有些好的大学也不要求,但是如果不考SAT2高中毕业想申请好的大学时就会受到很大限制。

  首先,要搞清楚所要申请学校的要求。并非所有的美国大学都要求有SAT2成绩,相当一部分普通大学和少量名校都不需要(NOT REQUIRED)考SAT2。如果你申请的学校都是不需要SAT2成绩的,而你备考TOEFL、SAT1的时间又很紧张,那么就没有必要去考SAT2。但大部分的美国名校是需要有SAT2成绩的,一般是需要两门或三门。在需要SAT2成绩的学校中,对具体科目的要求又不尽相同,有的学校没有规定科目,有的则给出了相当程度的指定,如加州理工学院(CALTECH)就要求所有申请者必须提供SAT2的数学2和科学类中的一门(即物理或化学或生物)成绩。

  前几天看微信朋友圈,看到一篇谈阅读的文章,其中有一句话让我深以为然:一篇(好)文章里的每一句话都不是空穴来风,言下之意是各有各的作用。这句话对SAT写作同样适用,因为在写之前,我们需要先读一篇650-750词的文章。而这篇文章的阅读质量将在很大程度上决定后面的写作质量。所以,在动笔写之前!希望大家建立良好的阅读习惯。下面我想结合两篇新SAT写作样题选段细谈。


新SAT写作部分的文章理解


  问:当我们在读文章的时候,我们要读些什么?

  答:"是什么"和"为什么"。前者指每句话是什么意思,后者指每句话在段落中的作用和联系,或每段话在全文中的作用和联系。

  以下选取新SAT写作样题Let There Be Dark第一段演示。

  原文

  (S1) The description of plastic grocery bags as "single-use" bags is another misnomer. (S2) The vast majority of people use them more than once, whether for lining trash bins or picking up after their dogs. (S3) (And still other bags are recycled.) (S4) Since banning plastic bags also means preventing their additional uses as trash bags and pooper scoopers, one unintended consequence of the plastic bag ban would likely be an increase in plastic bag purchases for these other purposes. (S5) This is just what happened in Ireland in 2002 when a 15 Euro cent ($0.20) tax imposed on plastic shopping bags led to a 77 percent increase in the sale of plastic trash can liner bags.

  段内逻辑关系:S1-3是S4的前提,或者S4是S1-3的结论。逻辑是因为塑料袋会被多次使用,所以禁止商店提供只会导致人们被迫购买,毕竟使用需求在那里。S5是用一个实例支持前方纯理论分析的正确。

  以下是新SAT写作样题Bag Ban Bad for Freedom and Environment第7段。

  所以本段重点是S4:one unintended consequence of the plastic bag ban would likely be an increase in plastic bag purchases for these other purposes.遗憾的是,三分之二的学生判断为S1。

  很多同学之所以文章理解出偏差,就是因为没有分析清楚段落句群内部的关联。另同学虽然判断正确,但不知道为什么是这样,单纯凭语感碾压。更有甚者,判对之后就懒得听我解释和推导,认为浪费时间。这些都不是好习惯。希望大家知其然,且知其所以然。Every sentence matters.
